Nintendo Announces 2008 Release Dates (Sort of)

January 16, 2008

I hate how Nintendo gives such non-specific release times for their upcoming games. It’s like they are planning to postpone the games. The latest Nintendo announcement gives tentative release schedules in various periods of time for many of the upcoming Wii and DS games. After looking through the list, here are the ones that caught my eye for the Wii.

Mario Kart Wii

Wii
February: Karaoke Revolution Presents: American Idol Encore from Konami
March 25: Okami from Capcom
Spring: Mario Kart Wii with Wii Wheel from Nintendo
Summer: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed from LucasArts
Q2: Wii Fit from Nintendo

Wii Fit

See how it goes from day specific to as vague as Quarter 2 for Wii Fit? I’m glad to see that Karaoke Revolution isn’t dead. I’m hoping that it ends up on the 360 and features some DLC to rival SingStar. I’m not even going to look forward to Mario Kart Wii or Wii Fit yet because we now have to wait even longer for Brawl. I was also able to spot a few DS games of interest.

Days of Ruin

DS
Jan. 21: Advance Wars: Days of Ruin from Nintendo/Intelligent Systems
February: Assassin’s Creed Altair’s Chronicles™ from Ubisoft
March 11: FINAL FANTASY CRYSTAL CHRONICLES: Rings of Fate from Square Enix
Summer: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed from LucasArts

The dates are a little more specific but I’m glad that a new Advance Wars is coming VERY soon. For the full complete list of upcoming Wii and DS games, hit the jump button. (more…)

Nintendo to Sponsor Austrailian Open

January 11, 2008

Mark Philippoussis

I find this a great way for Nintendo to advertise. One of the biggest draws for the Nintendo Wii has and still is Wii Sports, primarily Wii Tennis. The company has signed on to be the “Official Gaming Console Supplier” for the Australian Open, which will take place at Melbourne Park from January 14-27.

Nintendo will be able to spread it’s already ever-growing popularity to the masses of Pro Tennis. Visitors to the event are given the chance to try out the Wii and enter a competition to win prizes such as a Wii console or a DS with the not yet released game, Sight Training. On top of that, participants may also have the chance to play Wii Tennis against Mark Philippoussis, an Australian Pro Tennis player.

As surprising as it is, there are still people out there who know about the Wii, but don’t know what the craze is all about. I was recently at a Circuit City (probably trying to find a cheap game) and I overheard a man trying to explain how he got to try out the Wii at a friend’s house to a woman. She just couldn’t understand how it all worked but they both were talking about how every kid seems to want one. Through an event such as this, I’m sure Nintendo will be converting lots of non-gaming people.

Virtual Console This Week

December 24, 2007

Did Nintendo really come out with a Donkey Kong Country 3? What was it like? I guess I can download the game for $8 but then there’s this great website called YouTube that allows me to see this:

Um… I think I’ll pass. I do need to download the first one though. That one snow barrel blasting level is the best! Here are the three games you’ll find on VC this week:

BLADES OF STEEL™ (NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone-Mild Violence, 500 Wii Points): With stick in hand and confidence brimming, you are looking to bring home the cup, win the MVP award, get on the covers of major sports magazines and date a beautiful model (not necessarily in that order). But soon you will learn that, in this league, nothing is ever given to you, and before you can reach your goals, you’ll have to put the puck in the net and score some. You’ll need both the artful skills of a finesse player and the bone-crushing brutality of an enforcer. Defend your own goal against unrelenting power plays, or put the pressure on your opponent’s goalie and try a slap shot of your own. Don’t forget to defend yourself when anger flares because the gloves come off and fists start flying. So strap on blades of steel and prepare to either make a name for yourself or be put on ice.

Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble™ (Super NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points): Revisit Donkey Kong Island and join the Kong family for their latest adventure. The Kremlings have a mysterious new leader named KAOS and are up to their usual mischief, even capturing Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong. Now it’s up to Dixie Kong and the newest Kong, a giant infant named Kiddy, to rescue the two missing apes. They’ll travel across previously unseen parts of the island in their search, and even take to the skies in a rocket at one point. Lucky for them, Dixie and Kiddy’s powers complement each other (including Kiddy’s talent for rolling like a barrel), so they form a powerful team capable of major Kremling damage. They’re not completely on their own, either, since returning favorites like Funky Kong and Enguarde the swordfish provide help along the way. And in a series known for its abundance of secrets and high replay value, this entry doesn’t disappoint, with enough hours of game play to satisfy Donkey Kong himself. Anyone else have a sudden urge for some bananas?

Rolling Thunder™ 2 (Genesis, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone-Violence, 800 Wii Points): In this follow-up to the original classic, you are once again a member of Interpol’s Rolling Thunder task force, and it’s up to you to stop the return of the evil Geldra organization. Now known as Neo-Geldra and led by a newcomer named Gimdo, the bad guys are bent on destroying several valuable outer-space satellites. In this one- or two-player game, you can play as Leila or Albatross-both characters from the original-as you venture through several different levels, trying to put a stop to the nefarious efforts of Gimdo and the rest of Neo-Geldra. Use your bullets wisely and make Rolling Thunder proud.

Nintendo DS Compact – User-Made Video

December 21, 2007

This redesign has a cool idea. It sort of reminds me of how the Ipod Nano is fat now. I’m liking everything except for how that flip-up screen looks and the placement of the trigger buttons.

One Store Gets Daily Wii Shipments…

December 13, 2007

Nintendo World Store

… and that store is … the Nintendo World Store in New York City’s Rockefeller Center. The store receives Wii shipments every morning and have reportedly been subject to lines of around 200 people every morning.

I know I’ve said it before but this is getting ridiculous. If it hasn’t gotten there, it’s there now. People camping out two years in a row for the SAME exact item. That’s just nuts. Well, if you are still Wii-less and in the NYC area, maybe you should try there.

Deal of the Day – Amazon

December 12, 2007

Wow, it’s been a slow video games news days. I wanted to post about a few things that’s been going on but I honestly didn’t find them worthy. Getting a deal on a video game console though? Way worth the effort…

Although if you already have a Wii, you almost have no reason to own one of these, unless you just want to collect it as new in box. The Nintendo Gamecube is selling for a cool $59.99 on Amazon. That’s a savings of $40!

Paper Thwomp

I may just have to spend my whole day at work today putting one of these together. It looks pretty cool and it would look great on my naked desk area. Here are the if you want to do the same.

Gift of Virtual Console

December 6, 2007

This is a great idea for the holidays. Starting Dec. 11, Japanese Wii owners can send Virtual Console games as gifts to their friends online. Click the picture for a link to a demonstration video. This feature is also planned for the states so expect to see it before Christmas.

I think I will send Kingston his favorite game of all time… Bubble Bobble.

Wii Fit Looks Fun!

December 6, 2007

Admit it, when you found out that Nintendo was going to come out with a fitness game for the Wii, you were probably thinking about how lame it was going to be and that only housewives would be buying it. You probably also thought the balance board was lame and that it would just end up under your bed like a weight scale.

No? Well, I did, until I saw this video tour of the games and how they work. Just start watching it. I’ll wait…

Done yet? Doesn’t it look fun? The soccer ball one is bleh though but I’m digging the tight rope, the boxing and weird enough as it is, the jogging. It’s pretty cool that you can jog with another player and that you just throw the wii-mote in your pocket. I also like that other Mii’s on your machine will show up along the course.

The guy in the video, Josh, promises to have another segment to his tour that will include more games from WiiFit. I’m hoping it’s not going to be filled with lame stuff like Yoga (unless the word “fire” comes after it).

Swarovski Encrusted Wii

December 3, 2007

Wii

Who really needs something this though? Really? Well, for one, I would.

I’m not sure if it needed Swarovski crystals. It looks sweet either way. The design on the other side is awesome. Hit A to jump for another picture. (more…)
