I still don’t really know much about WiiWare. There hasn’t been anything that caught my attention for it… until NOW! Telltale Games, the guys behind the resurrection of the Sam and Max series, is bringing the popular web animated comic, Strong Bad, to WiiWare (and PC). Much like the Sam and Max games, Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People will be a point-and-click game and will be released in separate episodes. For those of you who don’t know who or what Strong Bad is, go check it out.

Sorry Kingston, I guess you can’t play this game…

I HATE Sports Games (every other year)

Yes, after a few weeks of my unexplained absence from BtoMelee, I am back. My only reason for not writing on here as often as I did is that I got busy. That’s pretty much all that I can say about that without making lame excuses.

Sports Games

So anyway, I decided to get back into the mix of things by talking about a pet peeve I have about one specific video game genre: Sports games. I hate how a series of a particular sports game turns into trash. Companies just recycle the original formula, add minimal tweaks and slap the a sticker on the cover with the next year on it.

Flat stomachs anyone?

Flat abs

Time and time again, we see Americans with oversized bellies. We as gamers/slackers have to beat that trend and slim down to stay healthy. I was never the lucky one with good genes and washboard abs however it can be conquered. Here are the three steps in obtaining that flat stomach.

1. More Cardio. Doing ab exercises will do nothing but display the layer of fat you have over your stomach. That’s not what you want, unless you want to look like wrestlers on WWF. In any case, you have to push it, whether it be swimming, running, biking, they all help. I recommend at least 30 minutes a day at moderate level intensity for about 5 days a week. Start off slow because you want to build your endurance while minimizing chances of injury. Make sure you work out your entire core, not just your abs. Your whole torso needs to be targeted (lower back, abs, and sides.) Strengthening your core will help increase your ability to do exercises with proper form, thus bettering your gain.

2. Less Sugary & Fatty Food. Okay seriously, the sugar infested foods will literally kill your chances in obtaining that flat stomach. I remember in an aerobics class I once took, the instructor definitely told us that majority of the time it’s 80% diet and 20% exercising. If you have the heart to throw away sweets and fatty foods, you’re already on a great start. If you have the will power to cut out meat, dairy and eggs, you’re phenomenal. However, most of us will have to deal with the latter, that is, low fat turkey, skinless chicken breast, lean beef, and fish.

3. Different people progress in different times; some see results fast, some slow. Don’t be disappointed when you’re a few weeks or even months down the line and don’t notice any changes. Trust me, your heart will feel a lot better, you’ll feel less tired, and your brain will feed off being healthy. Losing fat takes time, and losing too much too fast is unhealthy. Gradual loss is better and more likely to sustain over time. Working out a lot will increase your body’s wanting of calories so make sure you don’t starve nor over eat. I recommend a good 4 to 5 meal day, small meals, and maybe snack twice if you need to. (Nuts, fruits, veggies)

In a gaming standpoint, there’s the ever so fun, Wii Sports as well as the classic Dance Dance Revolution. Wii Fit will also revolutionize the industry if they ever release it in the US. A friend of mine lost tons of weight by just playing Dance Dance Revolution. It works wonders. Working out is always a drag but some find enjoyment through games while others in the gym. Either way, find what suits your lifestyle.

There are more advanced techniques but we’ll save that for another day. Until next time, happy eating, and treat yourself right so you don’t become the American stereotype. Recent studies have shown that bigger bellies are now linked to dementia, along with higher rates of developing diabetes, stroke, and heart disease.

With the release of Smash Brothers Brawl this week, we tend to forget the classic that made this game possible. Super Smash Brothers for the N Sixty Four. I know you’re thinking, who the fack plays that game anymore? Well, I do.

I remember when Smash Brothers Melee came out…

Kingston’s Dream Game, pt.1

I used to work at Electronic Arts as a Marketing Assistant for Sims titles, and I recently left the company to pursue a Systems Engineering career at a small Silicon Valley Startup.

But, while I was at EA, I used to talk to everyone about a dream game that I wished someone would create. I called it the “All Game”, where it would mix RPG, RTS, and FPS together. I always tried to find a way to pitch it to people using games that they knew. For example, when I’m talking to someone who plays Command and Conquer, C&C3 is already an RTS. But, imagine if you mixed Renegade into it. Or, if they were a Halo fan, imagine Halo FPS with Halo Wars at the same time.

The overall idea is to allow the player to either be a “General” or a “Hero”. The General would be a player who loved playing RTS games and the Heroes would be someone who loved playing FPS games. Then, while you were playing in a progressive MMO world, your general would have to maintain the troop building and economy, while your Hero would be leading a platoon or going solo in a First Person view.

I’ll get more into each play type in Part 2.

Mario Kart Wii video with Wii Wheel

Interesting videos we have here. We get to see to see how Mario Kart Wii plays with the Wii Wheel attachment (video above) and with the Wii-mote alone (video below). The guy’s impression is that the game does actually play better with the wheel. It seems to force players to hold the controller correctly and it looks like it might be more comfortable to press the B button on the wheel rather than on the Wii-mote to power slide.

I’m guessing most expert players will end up playing with their Gamecube controllers.

Guitar Hero DS

Since it was announced about a year ago that Activision was interested in bringing a version of Guitar Hero to the DS, there have been many visual mock-ups of how it would work. Many of these images featured mini-guitar attachments with fret buttons and the touch screen being the strum pad (see below). The game is called Guitar Hero On Tour

GH DS

They were right on with the touch screen being the place to strum and almost correct about where the fret buttons would go. It actually wouldn’t make sense for a mini-guitar attachment because it would make it awkward to play and actually watch the screen at the same time. Instead, the attachment would actually wrap around the back of the DS and insert into the GBA slot. It looks like it would make a lot of sense and it’ll also include a guitar pick stylus that can be stored in the peripheral.

Pretty cool stuff. There’s no release date announced yet though. Press the jump button to see a video of the game. The microphone is said to the possible trigger for star power. Read the rest of this post »
